The difference between city and countryside is obvious. For many artists, it is precisely this contrast that is inspiring. It is the unbiased view of the other or the view of the familiar filled with new impressions that makes the change between the two living spaces so exciting. The river appears as a connecting element between urban and rural space, but as a flowing stream it also becomes a symbol of the continuous tension.

Fast cars, colourful advertising posters and skimpy bikinis, the Pop Art of the 1960s and early 1970s allowed trivial everyday culture to merge with art in a new form. Since the 1980s, Swiss Pop Art has been a collection focus for the Kunstmuseum Thun. You will find some of these works here.

This city on Lake Thun, with its view of the Bernese Alps, has always attracted artists. From the Kleinmeisters to the present day, artists have depicted scenes of city life – from the Town Hall Square to the Sinne Bridge and on to the castle. Immerse yourself in the various views of Thun.

The annual Cantonale Berne Jura exhibition offers the region’s artists the opportunity to present their work at the end of the year.
