Cantonale artists on their work – Yannick Mosimann

I am currently exploring amphibian migrations and ancient paths. I am interested in how movement feels when it is slow. How orientation disappears when you don’t chase after it. And how places change when you don’t just pass through them, but listen to them.

There is hardly any community for experimental film in Switzerland. I often work alone, but that forces me to stay alert. To avoid getting stuck in this isolation, I travel to neighbouring countries, meet others, see how they work, exchange fragments, ideas, attitudes. Afterwards, my own work feels more open again.

I prefer to work with my Bolex H16, hand-cranked, 16mm. There are no electronics, no display, nothing that corrects. Just light, movement and the sound of the film running. I like the limitation, it creates closeness. I see differently when I know that every metre counts.
