Cantonale artists on their work – Lulu & Whiskey

The human hand cannot influence everything down to the last detail. Rather, things develop and unfold from the interaction with the environment and materials – spontaneously, openly and fluidly. The symbolism of water as a versatile and omnipresent element has long been a recurring theme in our work. Water is fluid, appears in different states of aggregation and reappears cyclically – indeed, it has existed in space longer than our planet itself. We take up this symbolism of changeability and boundlessness, scratch at the boundaries of linear thinking and binary categories, and question traditional views.

The idea of identity as something fluid serves as a metaphor for the cyclical nature of relationships – with their highs, lows and constantly changing dynamics. Here, we are also inspired by theories of hydrofeminism. An approach that understands water as a repository of collective history and as a connecting medium between bodies, times and places.

We turn our gaze towards the ground. Our hands open the ground, we dive into the layers. These soil horizons consist of diverse layers that overlap and interact with each other. They are composed of the long-term and short-term memory of the entire region. We feel, touch and listen to the clay.
