Kunstmuseum Thun

Located right in the city centre, directly on the banks of the River Aare, the Kunstmuseum Thun is housed in the premises of the former Grand Hotel Thunerhof. Built in the 1870s as Thun’s first luxury hotel, it enjoyed a brief heyday at the turn of the 20th century. In 1942, the building was acquired by the City of Thun, and in 1948 the Kunstmuseum took over the premises in the right-hand wing of the building.

The Kunstmuseum Thun presents three to four temporary exhibitions each year, focusing primarily on contemporary art. In addition to thematic and monographic special exhibitions, one exhibition from the collection is organised each year, presenting part of the rich holdings from a particular perspective. With the Thun Panorama, located in Schadaupark, some 15 minutes’ walk away, the Thun Art Museum also showcases the world’s oldest panoramic painting.

The Kunstmuseum Thun does not show its collection in a permanent exhibition.
The museum is closed between exhibitions.
