SUBODH GUPTA. SPIRIT EATERS
In close collaboration with Subodh Gupta (born 1964, lives and works in Delhi, India), the Kunstmuseum Thun is organizing the artist’s first institutional solo exhibition in Switzerland. In addition to works produced specifically for the exhibition, well-known monumental works will also be on display. They highlight different aspects of Gupta’s oeuvre. With its diversity of media, including sculpture, painting, and video, his work is deeply rooted in traditional rural and religious Indian society. The artist often uses and combines everyday objects such as crockery, clay pots, and bicycles as the basic material for his sculptures. This creates atmospheric images of a socially, economically, and culturally complex society. Gupta’s oeuvre encompasses the tension between global and traditional values and points to their change or even loss in a rapidly growing industrial society. A catalog (German/English) published by the Kunstmuseum Thun is available from Verlag für moderne Kunst Nürnberg to accompany the exhibition.
