Parallel to Hollow Laughter, the first institutional solo exhibition in Switzerland by renowned Canadian artist Marcel Dzama, young Swiss artists Augustin Rebetez and the U5 collective are represented with smaller exhibitions—
when our dreams trickle down your umbrella, the weather is nice and Parasite. The art-historical insert with Albrecht Dürer’s illustrations of Sebastian Brant’s verse poem Das Narrenschiff (1494) serves as a hinge between the exhibitions.

The artists featured in the exhibitions engage deeply with contemporary images of the world and society, drawing inspiration primarily from everyday life and the mundane. In doing so, they sharpen our awareness of the excesses of society. Their works, some of which appear archaic, often reveal the vulnerability and unease that lie hidden behind fragile interpersonal constellations, translating these into impressive worlds of experience. At first glance, Dzama’s imagery appears harmless, almost innocent. But behind this façade lies a grotesque and sometimes cruel universe: masked, uniformed, and armed figures dancing, loving, or tormenting each other are the protagonists of his pictorial world. In Rebetez’s works, the mystery of the night, dreams, and the boundaries between reality and fiction are frequent themes. The dense works of U5 move between nature and artificiality, utopia and myth.

Three publications (German/English) will be released in mid-May in connection with the exhibition, published by Verlag für moderne Kunst Nürnberg and Kunstmuseum Thun (complete edition ISBN 978-3-86984-092-5).
