US artist Lorna Simpson (b. 1960) rose to fame in the 1980s with conceptual works composed of both photographs and texts. In her photographs, films paintings and collages, Simpson challenges conventional view of memory, identity, ethnicity, history, gender and fiction. The exhibition presents a cross-section of her multivalent oeuvre, including recent works such as her monumental paintings of ice – a motif that is also reflected in her sculptures and has the effect of immersing the viewer in the dichotomies of figuration versus abstraction.
