In 1940, the Kunsthaus Zürich hosted an exhibition featuring 11 artists from Bern. During the war, international loans became impossible, prompting a return to Swiss art. This provided an opportunity to introduce new positions or to remind people of others.
The Kunstmuseum Thun is using this exhibition as the starting point for its collection exhibition, which features works by some of the artists shown at that time and provides an insight into the museum’s collecting activities back then. In addition, eleven contemporary Bernese artists are presented, some of whom are also part of the museum’s collection. The artists are roughly the same age as those artists were at the time and are currently shaping the local art scene. The diversity of themes and media used reflects the breadth of artistic creation in Bern then and now.
