Wilfried von Gunten

Wilfried von Gunten was born in Thun in 1954. After an apprenticeship as a gilder and conservator, he studied at the Ecole Supérieure d’Art Visuel [School of visual arts] in Geneva, under Chérif Défraoui and others. In the 1980s he was one of the co-founders of the artist collective “Mühle” [The Mill]. In the now demolished mill building in the old town of Thun (today’s Mühleplatz), von Gunten opened an artists’ co-operative gallery. In 1982, he took over the gallery of his father, gallery owner Emil von Gunten, on the premises of the «Alte Oele», which he managed until 1997. From 1982 to 1997, he was member of the City of Thun’s Art Commission. In 1996, von Gunten was awarded the “Kulturstreuer” prize by the City of Thun for outstanding work in the field of cultural mediation. From 1997 till 1999 he served as interim director of the Kunstmuseum Thun. Von Gunten has changed the location of his gallery several times: after the «Alte Oele», he ran an art space under his name from 2000 to 2009, and then moved into the Selve-Areal with the « New Space» art space in 2009. Von Gunten lives and works in Thun.
