Sabine Portenier was born in Bern in 1971. After graduating as a home economics teacher she completed a short course as a dressmaker, and then worked as a studio assistant in the trainees’ workshop of the Schlossberg School for dressmakers in Thun. She then attended the fashion design department of the Höhere Fachschule für Gestaltung [School of Design] in Basel. In 1999 she was awarded the Thuner Kulturförderpreis [Thun recognition award] and subsequently twice won the Eidgenössischer Preis für Design [Federal Design Prize]. She also works in France and Germany, and worked independently with Evelyne Roth from 2007. They relocated production to Thun in 2013. In 2015 they went their separate ways and Portenier founded her own label and workshop in Thun. In 2020 she was awarded the Thuner Kulturpreis [Thun Cultural Prize] for her work. She lives and works in Thun.
