Rudolf Zender was born in Rüti in 1901. After completing his secondary school education, he began studying history in Heidelberg and Zurich in 1920 and also took drawing and painting courses. He abandoned his studies in 1923, trained as a teacher and travelled to Paris where he continued his studies at the Académie Ranson. After a severe lung disease, he went to Davos Clavadel for a cure in 1925, where he met Ernst Ludwig Kirchner. He returned to Paris in 1927. In 1929, he exhibited for the first time at the Salon d’Automne in Paris, and also showed his works at exhibitions in Switzerland. In 1932 he became a member of the Winterthur artists’ group, and in 1936 he was one of the Swiss representatives at the Venice Biennale. He returned to Switzerland at the beginning of World War II, but left for Paris again in 1947. Zender received numerous prizes and awards, such as the Karl Heinrich Ernst Prize in 1959, the Winterthurer Kunstpreis [Winterthur Art Prize] in 1964 and the Ehrengabe [honorary gift] of the Canton of Zurich in 1980. Zender owned a studio in Paris until 1982. He returned to Winterthur in 1984, where he died in 1988.
