Richard Paul Lohse was born in Zurich in 1902. Between 1918 and 1922 he completed an appren-ticeship as an advertising illustrator under Max Dalang. Self-taught, he explored painting and tried out various styles. In 1937, he and Leo Leuppi founded “Allianz” [Alliance], an avant-garde associa-tion of modern Swiss art. During the Second World War, Lohse became politically involved in the resistance movement and supported emigrants. 1943 was a breakthrough year in his painting. He exhibited his works at home and abroad: for example, in 1961 at the Stedelijk Museum in Amster-dam, and in 1982 at documenta 7 in Kassel. Between 1947 and 1956 he was the designer and edi-tor of the journal “Bauen + Wohnen” [Building + Living]. In 1953 he published his book “Neue Aus-stellungsgestaltung” [New Design in Exhibitions]. From 1958 he co-edited the journal Neue Grafik [New Graphic Design]. Lohse died in Zurich in 1988.
