René Küng was born in Allschwill in 1934. In 1950 he attended the preliminary course at the Kunstgewerbeschule [school of arts and crafts] in Basel. Between 1952 and 1955 he completed an apprenticeship as a stonemason. He then worked in this profession for 18 months during which he helped with the restoration of Basel Cathedral and other projects. In the mid-1950s he travelled to France, Spain and Ibiza for several months. In 1958 Küng started out as an independent sculptor. In 1964, he received the Eidgenössische Kunststipedium [Swiss Federal Art Scholarship] and from 1964 to 1968 spent four years teaching sculpture at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Basel. In the early 1970s, he went on study trips to southern France and Rome. After marrying and having a family, he settled in Schönenbuch in 1980, but from 1982 he also lived in Le Beaucet, Provence. He started showing his work in various exhibitions in Switzerland and abroad in the 1960s. In 1992, he was awarded the Canton of Basel-Landschaft’s Anerkennungspreis [recognition prize] for fine arts. Küng lives and works in Schönenbuch and Le Beaucet.
