Peter Stein

Peter Stein was born in Burgdorf in 1922. After attending the Literaturgymnasium [literary grammar school] in Bern, he trained as a drawing teacher at the Allgemeine Gewerbeschule [general vocational school] in Basel between 1941 and 1944, and attended Heinrich Müller’s painting class. From 1945 to 1947, he completed a glass-painting apprenticeship under Paul Wüthrich in Bern. In the 1950s and 60s, he worked as a drawing teacher at the vocational school at first in Thun and later in Bern. He regularly attended Max von Mühlenen’s art school, where he met his future wife Vreni Bähler, and moved with her to Muri near Bern. Stein received many awards for his work: the Scholarship from the Louise Aeschlimann Foundation of the Bernische Kunstgesellschaft [Bernese Art Society] (today the Aeschlimann Corti Scholarship) in 1953; the Max Beckmann Society scholarship (Munich) in 1955; and a Swiss federal government scholarship in 1961. From 1957, he began to show his works in numerous exhibitions, including at the Wilhelm Hack Museum in Ludwigshafen (1982), the Kunsthalle Bern (1989) and the Kunsthaus Zug (1997). In 1980, together with Wilfrid Moser and Oscar Wiggli, he represented Switzerland at the 39th Venice Biennale. Stein died in Muri near Bern in 2015.
