Paul Wiedmer was born in Burgdorf in 1947. Between 1963 and 1966 he completed an apprenticeship as a metalworker in Burgdorf. He was then a pupil under Bernhard Luginbühl and assistant to Jean Tin-guely and Niki de Saint Phalle until 1973. Among other projects, he worked on the giant walk-in sculp-ture “Le Cyclop” in the forest near Milly-la-Forêt in France. In 1970 he moved into his own studio in Burgdorf. He started working as a freelance artist in 1973 and produced his first iron sculptures two years later. In 1977, he and Tinguely participated in the joint project “Crocrodrome de Zig et Puce” at the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris. In 1980, Wiedmer was one of the co-founders of the Burgdorf Sculp-ture Symposium. He was then a Scholar at the Istituto Svizzero di Roma [Swiss Institute in Rome] for two years and worked in his own studio near Rome. In 1997 he founded the sculpture garden “La Serpa-ra” near Orvieto in Italy. Wiedmer has received numerous scholarships and internships (for example for stays in Finland, South Korea and Namibia). Between 1998 and 2002, he was artistic director of the “Artcanal” project. Wiedmer lives and works in Civitella d’Agliano (Italy) and in Burgdorf.
