Otto Tschumi was born in Bern in 1904. He grew up in Oberhofen and later in Bern. After leaving school, Tschumi tried various professions such as heating engineer, chemigrapher, architect and lithographer. He also worked as a graphic designer for some time. Between 1921 and 1925 he attended the Gewerbeschule [vocational school] in Bern. After a few months in London, he moved to Paris in 1936, returning to Switzerland (Köniz) in 1940. As early as 1937 he showed his work at a solo exhibition at the Galerie Jeanne Bucher in Bern. This was followed by other solo and group exhibitions, such as at the Kunsthalle Bern with Serge Brignoni in 1946, and he took part in the first São Paulo Art Biennial in 1951. After the “Contemporary Swiss Painting” exhibition organised by the Smithsonian Institution in 1952, Tschumi went on an extended trip to America. In 1960, together with Varlin and Robert Müller, he represented Switzerland at the 30th Venice Biennale. He died in Bern in 1985. Three years after his death, a large retrospective was held at the Kunstmuseum Bern and the Kunsthalle Nürnberg.
