Matias Spescha

Matias Spescha was born in Trun (canton of the Grisons) in 1925. Between 1941 and 1944 he completed an apprenticeship as a tailor, and worked as a pattern cutter and department manager in the Trun cloth factory until 1951. Between 1951 and 1955 Spescha worked as a poster artist for the Corso cinema in Zurich. He explored the art of Pablo Picasso, Georges Braque and Henri Matisse in some depth, and began to paint landscapes and still lifes, but also figurative images. In 1954, Spescha finally moved to Paris where he attended Henri Bernard Goetz’s class at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière, and his work became more abstract from then on. In 1958 he moved to Bages in southern France, and a year later he took part in the São Paulo Biennial. In the early 1960s, Spescha explored Abstract Expressionism and French Art Informel, creating his own, almost object-like works. From 1970, he also created sculptures, murals and installations, and from the mid-1970s he produced numerous works for public spaces. In his works, Spescha deals primarily with the interaction of the sculptural object and its surroundings, as well as the interaction between the artwork and the viewer. Spescha died in Zurich in 2008.
