FilterMario Sala
Mario Sala was born in Winterthur in 1965. He completed an apprenticeship as a graphic designer, and then studied fine art at the Hochschule für Gestaltung [School of Arts and Crafts] in Zurich between 1989 and 1993. In addition to solo exhibitions, such as those at the Kunsthalle Winterthur (1996), the Kunst Museum Winterthur (2001) and the Helmhaus in Zürich (2004), Sala has received various prizes and sponsorship awards, including the Manor Kunstpreis Winterthur [Winterthur Manor Art Prize] (2001), the Fördergabe der Internationalen Bodenseekonferenz [Sponsorship Award of the International Lake Constance Conference] (2002) and the Eidgenössischer Wettbewerb für Kunst [Swiss Federal Art Competition] (2003). His multi-layered work encompasses painting, graphics and installations. He constructs his works by overlapping divergent components and also by using unusual materials such as dispersion glue or nail varnish. Sala repeatedly explores the idea of digression and allows the viewer to immerse themselves in pictorial spaces that fluctuate between fiction and reality. Sala lives and works in Winterthur.
