Leo Leuppi

Leo Leuppi was born in Zurich in 1893. After attending grammar school in Einsiedeln, he attended the specialist graphic-arts class at the Kunstgewerbeschule [school of arts and crafts] in Zurich from 1910 to 1914. Towards the end of the First World War, he came into contact with the Zurich Dada movement. It was here that he met Jean Arp, with whom he formed a lifelong friendship. According to his own account, from 1921 he continued his artistic education in numerous museums. In 1934, he established a loose group of artists under the name “Groupe Suisse Abstraction et Surréalisme”. Three years later, he and Richard Paul Lohse founded the “Allianz” [Alliance] artists’ association. In 1940, after a jointly curated exhibition, Leuppi and Lohse published the Almanach neuer Kunst in der Schweiz [Almanac of New Art in Switzerland], in which works of most Allianz members can be found. Leuppi then organised further exhibitions with the Allianz members, the last of which was held in the Helmhaus gallery in Zurich in 1954. Starting in the 1950s, Leuppi also produced works for public spaces. In 1958, he took part in the 29th Venice Biennale. Between 1959 and 1960 he taught experimental design in the fashion class at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Zurich. He gave up his studio in 1963 and spent the last years of his life in a nursing home in Zurich. Leuppi died in Zurich in 1972.
