Jean-Pierre Eichenberger

Jean-Pierre Eichenberger was born in Carouge in 1926. He studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts [School of Fine Arts] in Geneva under, among others, Alexandre Mairet, who encouraged him to explore the art of frescoes in greater depth. In 1948, Eichenberger and Raymond Perrenoud paint-ed a fresco in the church in Valangin in the canton of Neuchâtel. One year later he worked on a mural at the military barracks in Thun. In 1952, he realised a fresco in the Plan-les-Ouates church in Geneva. After the death of his wife in 1956, Eichenberger travelled to France with his family. Dur-ing a journey through southern France, he discovered an abandoned farmhouse in the village of Piégon. He spent several years turning it into a meeting place for artists and art lovers, which was inaugurated in 1964. In the Centre artistique [art centre] de Piégon, he and his family organised workshops, seminars and exhibitions. Eichenberger died in Avignon in 2000. His cultural centre is still run by his family.
