Henry Moore

Henry Moore was born in Castleford, Yorkshire, in 1898. After his military service, he began studying at Leeds School of Art in 1919 and received a scholarship to study at the Royal College of Art in London in 1921, becoming a teacher there in 1925. He held his first solo exhibition in 1928 at the Warren Gallery in London. Moore regularly stayed in Paris and made contact with other artists such as Constantin Brâncuși and Pablo Picasso. In the 1930s, Moore taught at Chelsea School of Art. In 1946, a retrospective of his work was held at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Moore subsequently held many exhibitions and received important awards and a number of honorary doctorates, such as those from Harvard University and the University of Cambridge. He died in Much Hadham, Hertfordshire, in 1986.
