Heinz Schwarz was born in Arbon in 1920. When he was six years old, he and his family moved to Gerlafingen in Solothurn. In 1936 he began an apprenticeship as a lithographer in Aarau. Between two deployments in the military, Schwarz went to Geneva in 1943 to teach himself sculpture. He rented a studio there on the Boulevard Carl-Vogt. That same year, he completed an internship with Karl Geiser in Zurich. He continued his education with sculptor Jakob Probst. After the war, Schwarz spent time in Italy (mainly Florence, Rome and Pompeii), France and Egypt. Back in Geneva, he took over the former studio of artist and professor Max Weber on the Rue du Stand until 1968. After re-ceiving numerous federal awards and scholarships (1949, 1950, 1956, 1952 and 1973), Schwarz was awarded the Kunstpreis [Art Prize] by the Canton of Solothurn in 1978. In 1992, the Kun-stmuseum Solothurn organised a comprehensive retrospective of his work. Schwarz died in Satigny in 1994.
