Heinz-Peter Kohler was born in Biel in 1935. After abandoning a business apprenticeship, he attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich from 1955 and trained in Max von Mühlenen’s art school between 1960 and 1970. He started showing his works in exhibitions in the 1960s. He has received numerous awards and prizes, including the Aeschlimann Scholarship in 1962, the Kiefer-Hablitzel Scholarship in 1970, and the Kulturpreis der Stadt Biel [Culture Prize of the City of Biel] in 1999. He is politically involved in the cultural scene, among other things, and was a key supporter of the founding of a new cultural institution (today’s Kunsthaus Biel) in Biel. Kohler lives and works in Biel.
