Heinz Brand was born in Biberist in 1944. After going to school in Biberist and Bern, he attended the Kunstgewerbeschule [school of arts and crafts] in Bern between 1960 and 1965. After a year in Japan, he completed the photography class at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Zurich in 1968 and attended courses at the F+F Schule für experimentelle Gestaltung [F+F School for Experimental Design]. He then went to Brazil for two years in 1969. In 1974 he went to the Lodz Academy of Art in Poland as holder of a foreign scholarship. He moved to the Jan van Eyck Academie in Maastricht in 1976, where he studied film and installations until 1978 before returning to Switzerland. He often spends time aboard on scholarships and study visits: Japan in 1984, Paris in 1987, New York in 1991, and Rome in 1994. Brand shows his works in numerous exhibitions. He lives and works in Reichenbach bei Bern.
