Hans Ulrich Eduard Bühler-Volkart

Hans Ulrich Eduard Bühler-Volkart was born into the Bühler industrialist family in Winterthur in 1893. In his youth he took drawing lessons with Heinrich Reinhart, Alfred Messer and Jakob Greuter. In 1914 he stayed in England until the outbreak of the First World War. In 1916, Bühler studied painting and drawing with Lovis Corinth in Berlin, and in 1917 he he spent time in Geneva. He also joined the family company Ed. Bühler & Co. in 1917 and, after the death of his father in 1932, took over the man-agement of the company together with his brother Robert. A spinning-mill owner, he devoted himself to his artistic activities on the side, primarily graphic design and painting. In 1923, he moved with his family to Berg am Irchel Castle. Bühler was passionate about horses and riding. He took part in the 1924 Olympic Games and won the silver medal in the team jumping competition with the Swiss show jumping team. In the 1930s he worked exclusively in sculpture, specialising in the depiction of horses. He showed his works in various exhibitions in Switzerland, including at the Kunstmuseum Winterthur in 1954. Bühler died in 1967.
