Hans Hartmann

Hans Hartmann was born in Villnachern in 1913. After going to school in Villnachern and Schinznach, he worked in the advertising office of the Bally shoe factory in Schönenwerd from 1930 to 1932. Afterwards heattended the Gewerbeschule in Zurich, from 1933 to 1936 as a working student in the graphic design class. In 1936 he set up a studio in Bern with Hans Fischer (fis), and two years later he moved into his own studio, where he often worked together with his wife, graphic designer Rita Casal. He made a name for himself early on with his shopwindow displays through-out Switzerland, starting with his designs for the Bern sports shop Vaucher. He also worked on exhibition concepts, such as the Landesausstellungen [national exhibitions] of 1939 (Zurich) and 1964 (Lausanne). As a graphic designer, he worked for Swissair and SBB [Swiss Federal Railways], designed stamps for Swiss Post and posters for road saftey. After leaving his studio, Hartmann continued to devote himself to the liberal arts, exploring iron sculpture, stained-glass painting and watercolours. He died in 1991 in Heiligenschwendi.
