Hans Gerber was born in Steffisburg in 1910. After going to school in Steffisburg, he attended Kirchenfeld grammar school in Bern. Between 1930 and 1932 he studied English language and literature at the universities of Bern, Lausanne and Munich where he decided to abandon his studies and devote himself to sculpture. He showed his first works in clay to the professor and sculptor Hans Stangl who took him into his studio as a pupil. Gerber returned to Switzerland in 1934 and settled in Zurich after a stay in Ascona. He was a member of the GSMBA and showed his work in solo and group exhibitions. He went on long study trips to France and Italy between 1937 and 1939. In 1950 he moved to Buchillon on Lake Geneva with the writer Hans Walter. He died in 1978 in Morges.
