Gustave Piguet

Gustav Piguet was born in Interlaken in 1909 and grew up in Bern. Starting in 1924, he completed a four-year apprenticeship as a stone- and wood-sculptor with Etienne Perincioli in Bern and attended the Gewerbeschule and the Kunstgewerbeschule [vocational school and school of arts and crafts] in Bern. In 1928, he went to Paris and worked as a stonemason on construction sites making figures for cathedrals. He continued his education at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière and had his own studio in Montmartre for six years. He returned to Bern in 1939. In 1963, he moved his home and workplace to Hinterkappelen. He created numerous reliefs and large sculptures, mainly for public spaces, such as the Anker monument in Ins, the General Guisan memorial in Interlaken, and the capitals of the Abdankungshalle [memorial hall] in the cemetery in Bremgarten near Bern. He showed his small sculptures in various exhibitions, for example at the Kunstmuseum Thun in 1965 and the Kunsthalle Bern in 1970. Piguet died in Hinterkappelen in 1976.
