FilterFranz Niklaus König
Franz Niklaus König was born in Bern in 1765. From an early age he worked with his father, a painter and decorator. He studied under Tiberius Dominikus Wocher, his son Marquard, and Sigmund Freudenberger. Balthasar Anton Dunker introduced him to the techniques of print graphics. He married in 1786 and opened his own painting and decorating workshop. Between 1797 and 1809 he lived and worked first in Interlaken and then in Unterseen. He was called up for military service in 1798 and fought at Lengnau. For economic reasons he returned to Bern in 1809 where he worked as a teacher. He also began to paint slides, also known as transparencies or ‘diaphanies’, which he first presented as “Diaphanorama” in 1811. In 1815, he opened his first ‘slide gallery’ at his home at Marktgasse 41, Bern, which soon made him famous. He travelled through Germany and France with his transparencies. He died in Bern in 1832.
