Francine Simonin

Francine Simonin was born in Lausanne in 1936. She studied at the École cantonale des Beaux-Arts in Lausanne between 1955 and 1958. She also studied painting and drawing under sculptor Casimir Reymond. Between 1963 and 1967 Simonin collaborated with Pierre Cailler in his graphic art studio in Lausanne, and later went to Pietro Sarto in Villette. She exhibited her paintings for the first time in 1965, followed by further exhibitions at home and abroad. She won a scholarship from the Canada Council for the Arts in 1968, and then settled in Quebec. From then on, she commuted between Switzerland and Canada. Between 1970 and 1994 she taught sculpture at the Université du Québec. In 1990, she was awarded the Grand Prix Beaux-Arts by the Fondation Vaudoise pour la Culture [Canton of Vaud Culture Foundation]. In 1995 she produced stage sets for the play “Palindrome” with Lausanne choreographer Philippe Saire and artists Carmen Perrin and Arnold Helbling. Simonin died in Montreal in 2020.
