Erich Oetterli was born in Thun in 1958. Between 1974 and 1977, he completed an apprenticeship as a stonemason at the municipal civil engineering department in Thun. He then worked on the renovation of Schadau Castle and continued to train as a sculptor. In the 1980s, he worked on the restoration of the Gerechtigkeitsbrunnen (Fountain of Justice) statue in Bern, and in 2014 he worked on the renovation of the Pestalozzi school building in Thun. Oetterli also works as a freelance artist and mainly explores metal sculptures. He started to show his works in exhibitions in Switzerland and abroad in 1981. In 1984, he founded the “Baumgarten” artists’ association in Thun together with Hans Ittig and Daniel Hausig. He was also a member of the artist group “Projekt Querschnitt” [Project Cross Section] (with Franziska Maria Beck, Stefan Haenni, Edy Fink, Peter Wüthrich, Daniel Hausig, Lorenz Spring and Dominik Stauch), which existed from 1989 to 1992 and exhibited internationally, including in Moscow. Oetterli lives and works in Wimmis.
