Eduardo Chilida

Eduardo Chilida was born in San Sebastián in 1924. He began studying architecture at the Colegio Mayor Ximénez de Cisneros in 1943, but dropped out in 1946. He then attendet the private art academy Círculo de Bellas Artes in Madrid. Between 1948 and 1951, the sculptor and graphic artist lived in Paris, where he initially produced figurative sculptures in plaster. Back in Spain, his works became more abstract and he experimented with various materials such as wood, alabaster, granite, steel and clay. In the 1960s and 1970s, he also produced numerous prints. Using both media, Chilida investigated the boundaries of spatiality by exploring the correlation between object and space. His works have been shown in numerous exhibitions, such as documenta (1959 to 1977) and the Venice Biennale (1958 and 1990). In 1971, he was appointed visiting professor at the Carpenter Center for the Visual Arts at Harvard University (Cambridge, MA). In 2000, his artistic work was honoured by the opening of the Museo Chilida Leku in Hernani. Chilida died in his birthplace of San Sebastián in 2002.
