Christian Megert was born in Bern in 1936. After an apprenticeship as a bricklayer, he attended the Gewerbeschule [vocational school] in Bern between 1952 and 1956. After spending time in Stockholm and Berlin, he lived in Paris from 1958. He returned to Switzerland in 1960 and co-founded the international artist group Nouvelle Ecole Européenne in Lausanne. At the end of 1961, he became a member of the artist group ZERO, founded by Otto Piene and Heinz Mack. Also in 1961, he published the manifesto “Ein neuer Raum” [A new space] on the occasion of his first solo exhibition with mirrors at the Køpcke Gallery in Copenhagen. Megert exhibits his works in Switzerland and abroad, for example at the 33rd Venice Biennale (1966), the documenta 4 (1968), the Kunstmuseum Bern (1997) and the Museum Ritter in Waldenbuch (2015). In 1964, he co-founded the Aktuell gallery in Bern, whose aim was to promote new trends in art. Megert moved to Düsseldorf in 1973. From 1976 to 2002, he held the chair for ‘“Integration Bildende Kunst und Architektur” [Integration of fine arts and architecture] at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf. Megert lives and works in Bern and Düsseldorf.
