Chantal Michel was born in Bern in 1968. From 1989 to 1993 she attended the specialist ceramics class at the Schule für Gestaltung [School of Design] in Bern, and from 1994 to 1998 she attended the Kunstakademie Karlsruhe [Academy of Fine Arts Karlsruhe] under Prof. Harald Klingelhöller. She produced her first video works in 1997 and her first performances two years later. Michel developed this work into cycles of large-format photographs. She held her first solo exhibition at the Kunstmuseum Thun in 1999. She has received numerous awards, including the Kunstpreis der Stadt Thun [City of Thun Art Prize] in 2004 and the Kulturpreis des Berner Oberlandes [Bernese Oberland Cultural Prize] in 2009. For her project “Villa Gerber” she was awarded the Thuner Seestern in 2013. She lives and works in Bern.
