Beat Zumstein was born in Bern in 1927. In 1944 he attended the vocational school in Bern. One year later he moved to the cantonal Technikum [technical college] in Biel/Bienne, where he studied sculpture and lithography. He first presented his work in an exhibition in 1946. From 1947 to 1950 Zumstein had his own sculpture studio in Bern. He completed his studies in 1948. He received the Eidgenössisches Kunststipendium [Swiss Federal Art Scholarship] and travelled to Spain and Morocco. Afterwards he travelled to the UK. In the summer of 1951, Zumstein moved to Paris but returned home briefly at the end of the year to take part in the Christmas exhibition at the Kunstmuseum Thun (among other things) before finally settling in the French capital in 1952. Zumstein exhibited his work in Switzerland, France and Germany. The Kunstmuseum Bern hosted a retrospective for him in 1967. In the 1960s, he frequently travelled to Italy and Greece. In the 1970s he changed his first name to “Beatus”. Zumstein died in Péry (in the Bernese Jura) in 1984.
