Arnold Huggler

Arnold Huggler was born in Brienz in 1894. From 1909 to 1914, following the family tradition, he learnt the art of wood carving at the Schnitzlerschule [wood-carving school] in Brienz. From 1919 he studied in Paris at the Académie Julian, and in 1922 he was a master pupil under Henri Bou-chard and Paul Landowski. Huggler stayed in Paris until 1936, with study trips to Rome, London, Spain and Berlin. In 1923 he married the Zurich doctor Anna Guggenbühl and built up his own stu-dio in Paris. Two years later he had a house built by André Lurçat in the Cité Seurat. Due to the unrest in the run-up to the Second World War, Huggler returned to Switzerland with his wife in 1936 and moved to Zurich. In Switzerland, he received numerous commissions for sculptures in public spaces, such as the Gotthelf memorial in the Rosengarten [rosarium] in Bern, and the sculpture Sitzendes Mädchen [sitting girl] (‘Vreneli’) on the quay in Brienz. Huggler died in Zurich in 1988.
