FilterAlex Hanimann
Alex Hanimann was born in Mörschwil in 1955. Between 1977 and 1981 he trained as a drawing teacher at the Schule für Gestaltung [School of Design] in Zurich and then worked as a freelance artist in St Gallen. In addition to his artistic career, Hanimann has also made a name for himself in other areas: in 1987 he was one of the co-founders of the Kunsthalle St Gallen; he was a member of the Swiss Federal Art Commission between 1997 and 2004; and he has been a lecturer at the Zürcher Hochschule der Künste [Zurich University of the Arts] since 2003. In his multimedia work, Hanimann deals with our world view and how we see things. He borrows from the visual repertoire of Western culture and assembles existing images and objects into new visual worlds. Language also plays an important role in his work and has been an integral part of his oeuvre since 1992. By confronting opposites, Hanimann encourages the viewer to think differently and challenges firmly established ideologies.
