Christian Megert wird 1936 in Bern geboren. Nach einer Lehre als Maurer besucht er von 1952 bis 1956 die Gewerbeschule in Bern. Nach Aufenthalten in Stockholm und Berlin lebt er ab 1958 in Paris. 1960 kehrt er in die Schweiz zurück und wird Mitbegründer der internationalen Künstlergruppe Nouvelle Ecole Européenne in Lausanne. Ende 1961 wird er Mitglied in der von Otto Piene und Heinz Mack gegründeten Künstlergruppe ZERO. Ebenfalls 1961 veröffentlicht er das Manifest «Ein neuer Raum» anlässlich seiner ersten Einzelausstellung mit Spiegeln in der Kopenhagener Galerie Køpcke. Megert zeigt seine Arbeiten im In- und Ausland, wie etwa 1966 an der XXXIII. Biennale di Venezia, 1968 an der documenta 4, 1997 im Kunstmuseum Bern oder 2015 im Museum Ritter in Waldenbuch. 1964 ist er Mitbegründer der «Galerie aktuell» in Bern. Diese will die neuen Tendenzen in der Kunst fördern.1973 zieht Megert nach Düsseldorf. Dort übernimmt er von 1976 bis 2002 den Lehrstuhl für «Integration Bildende Kunst und Architektur» an der Kunstakademie Düsseldorf. Megert lebt und arbeitet in Bern und Düsseldorf.

Christian Megert was born in Bern in 1936. After an apprenticeship as a bricklayer, he attended the Gewerbeschule [vocational school] in Bern between 1952 and 1956. After spending time in Stockholm and Berlin, he lived in Paris from 1958. He returned to Switzerland in 1960 and co-founded the international artist group Nouvelle Ecole Européenne in Lausanne. At the end of 1961, he became a member of the artist group ZERO, founded by Otto Piene and Heinz Mack. Also in 1961, he published the manifesto “Ein neuer Raum” [A new space] on the occasion of his first solo exhibition with mirrors at the Køpcke Gallery in Copenhagen. Megert exhibits his works in Switzerland and abroad, for example at the 33rd Venice Biennale (1966), the documenta 4 (1968), the Kunstmuseum Bern (1997) and the Museum Ritter in Waldenbuch (2015). In 1964, he co-founded the Aktuell gallery in Bern, whose aim was to promote new trends in art. Megert moved to Düsseldorf in 1973. From 1976 to 2002, he held the chair for ‘“Integration Bildende Kunst und Architektur” [Integration of fine arts and architecture] at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf.
